Birmingham-based Turnaround Firm Celebrates 25th Anniversary

In 1987, Van Conway and Don MacKenzie were finding success at an accounting firm. However, they quickly came to the realization that no one was providing crisis management and financial, operational and strategic services to the middle market companies.

“Back then, everyone was focused on the big guys,” recalls Conway, CEO of Conway Mackenzie Inc. “The space was clustered with firms going after the large companies, and the middle market was under serviced.”

That year, the two men opened the doors of their consulting firm in Birmingham and never looked back. 25 years later, Conway MacKenzie, Inc., has thrived by providing specialized financial, turnaround consulting and litigation support services to middle market companies around the globe.

The firm’s goal is to equip healthy businesses with tools and knowledge and to provide troubled companies with proven strategies to get back on track. Over the years, the firm has developed expertise in turnaround management consulting, bankruptcy and fiduciary services, operations consulting and interim executive management, performance improvement, crisis management, and due diligence services.

“Through the course of our experience, we have stepped in to help companies that need tweaks here and there and armed them with components they need to grow and become industry leaders,” says MacKenzie, co-founder. “That being said, there are a number of situations when we are unable to turn a company around. In these cases, we work to provide all stakeholders with the most beneficial range of options, whether it is a sale, bankruptcy or a wind-down.”

The firm is generally sought out to help turn around struggling companies in a wide array of industries, including automotive, energy, government/municipal, manufacturing, gaming & hospitality, entertainment, healthcare, retail, food & agriculture, and transportation.

In the two-and-a-half decades since its founding, Conway MacKenzie has grown from a small local firm with five professionals in Detroit into an industry leader with more than 100 professionals based in ten locations across the globe, including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Houston, and London. The key to the company’s growth has been recruiting and retaining the top talent, says Conway.
